2021 Course Offerings
We offer a variety of certification courses through the American Sailing Association, from beginner keelboat to advanced coastal cruising. Courses can be booked individually, or bundled, and private lessons can be arranged for a premium fee. We are pleased to offer all courses based on your availability - let us know if you require alternative dates not on our Schedule. American Sailing Association Courses
ASA 101 - Basic Keelboat Sailing
$550.00 CAD plus HST - Students are to purchase course textbook Sailing Made Easy at ASA.com
12 hours on water, 4 hours theory
Learn to skipper a sloop-rigged keelboat by day in light to moderate winds and sea conditions. Learn basic sailing terminology, parts and functions, helm commands, basic sail trim, points of sail, buoyage, seamanship and safety including basic navigation rules to avoid collisions and hazards.

ASA 103 - Basic Coastal Cruising
$700.00 CAD plus HST - Students are to purchase course textbook Coastal Cruising Made Easy at ASA.com
Prerequisite: ASA 101
14 hours on water, 6 hours theory
Learn to skipper a sloop-rigged auxiliary powered keelboat by day, in moderate winds and sea conditions. Learn cruising sailboat terminology, basic boat systems, auxiliary engine operation, docking procedures, intermediate sail trim, navigation rules, basic coastal navigation, anchoring, weather, safety and seamanship.

ASA 104 - Bareboat Cruising
$1,100.00 CAD plus HST - Students are to purchase course textbook Bareboat Cruising Made Easy at ASA.com Prerequisites: ASA 101 and ASA 103
3 days/2 nights
Learn how to sail a sloop-rigged auxiliary powered sailboat during a multiday cruise upon inland/coastal waters in moderate/heavy winds and sea conditions. Learn about provisioning, boat systems, auxiliary engines, advanced sail trim,coastal navigation, anchoring/mooring, docking, emergency operations, weather and more.

ASA 105 - Coastal Navigation
$300.00 CAD plus HST - Students are to purchase course textbook Coastal Navigation Manual - Pyzel at ASA.com
6 to 8 hours theory
Learn the navigational theory and practices for safe navigation of a sailing vessel in coastal and inland waters. On-water coastal navigation skills elements are contained in the ASA 103 Basic Coastal Cruising, ASA 104 Bareboat Cruising and ASA 106 Advanced Coastal Cruising, in progressively increasing levels of detail.

ASA 106 - Advanced Coastal Cruising
$1,800.00 CAD plus HST - Students are to purchase course textbook Annapolis Book of Seamanship OR International Marine Book of Sailing at ASA.com
Prerequisites: ASA 101, 103, 104 and 105
5 days/4 nights
Learn to safely act as skipper and crew of a sailing vessel about 30 to 50 feet in length on longer voyages on coastal and inland waters, in any conditions, incorporating all the skill elements of the previous certifications, with the added challenge of night sailing.

All prices are in Canadian dollars. Provisioning is extra.
Payment is accepted by e-transfer and PayPal; credit card payment can be accepted with additional fees.
Full balance is due upon confirmation of your scheduled course. We cannot guarantee course dates without payment in full. Full refunds will be provided if North Shore Reaching must cancel a course due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Refunds minus a 25% administrative fee are available as follows:
100% - 30 days or more before the scheduled course
50% - 14 days or more before the scheduled course
25% - 7 days or more before the scheduled course
Under 7 days - no refunds
***For safety reasons courses may need to be cancelled and/or rescheduled due to weather and/or wind conditions on short notice. These decisions are made at the sole discretion of North Shore Reaching and also based on experience of students, level of difficulty of the course etc. If this occurs, we will work with you to reschedule at a mutually agreeable date***
